My spiel:

Calum Bowen is an award-winning composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He studied under Martin Butler and Ed Hughes at the University of Sussex graduating with a first class honours degree and receiving the David Osmand-Smith Prize for Best Music Dissertation. During his studies he was prolific in composing for radio, theatre, film and games outside of the course. This culminated in joining Andrew Augustine (artist, Sims 3: Pets) as a founding member of independent games company Notion Games. Finding critical acclaim (Pocket Gamer) for his contribution to Notion Games’ first title Up Up Ubi. In the concert hall, Calum has written for his jazz sextet Catfish Blue, winning the Rhinegold Education Student Composition Award at The National Music for Youth competition; the Aurora Orchestra, whilst studying under John Metcalf; and for the University of Sussex New Music Ensemble in Brighton. In addition to this he has been involved in orchestral management as a key member of the University of Sussex Symphony Orchestra committee.

Calum’s musical style can be defined most clearly by the amalgamation of a classical composition training and an obsession with technology. He is a versatile composer who can shine in a vast array of genres: Chiptune, Orchestral, Metal, Hip-Hop, Electronic Dance Music and many more. This versatility stands upon a deep rooted foundation in Jazz sensibilities which help to define Calum’s far-reaching output. Incidentally his main infuences: Yoko Kanno, Kazumi Totaka, Masashi Hamauzu, Joe Hisaishi, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky and Astor Piazzolla, seem to share this foundation in Jazz.

Outside of music Calum has been studying the Japanese language for three years, hoping to find work out there and better understand the games and films which shaped his youth. Voluntarily teaching composition part-time at Langley Park School for Boys and hoping to teach English in Japan in 2013, Calum has a huge passion for learning and teaching. A passion that stretches to an interest in computer programming (GamerMaker, Max/MSP, PureData, Fmod) which he hopes will allow him to create his own games as well as better understand the development of the games he writes music for.
